User Agency in Streaming Media (Netflix)

People are addicted to different kinds of things. As Adam Alter mentioned in his book Irresistible, people have been hooked on technologies such as social medias and digital devices. In this project, we collaborate with Adam to investigate how users get addicted to Netflix and are there ways to mediate this issue. This project is under the supervision of Prof Marshini Chetty.

This project is a long-term and a longitudinal study as we need to take account of how different seasons affect users’ watching behaviors. We have came up ways or “interventions” to let users understand their addictive behavior. For example, we can provide data visualization dashboard to users. Hopefully, the graph can invoke reflective thinking which can, in turn, reduce binge watching. Here are some screenshots of our dashboard.
